Mathematics and Honesty

Abstract: In a number of arenas such as auctions, fair division, and voting, mathematics contributes to the social sciences by providing procedures to accomplish things of interest to economists and political scientists. Do these procedures, however, perform well when judged by a core humanistic value like honesty? We consider several such procedures and ask, for each, if it inspires honesty on the part of the participants, and – if not – can we change it slightly so that it does. The resulting questions (both real-world and metaphorical) range from those appropriate for the undergraduate classroom to those whose answers are not yet known.
